Three Essential Knots
One of the biggest misconceptions about fly fishing is that it requires mastering dozens of complicated knots. The truth is much simpler. If you learn just three basic knots, you can handle nearly every trout fishing situation you’ll encounter on the water.
At Trico Unlimited, these are the three knots we teach first because they are strong, simple, and practical on the river.
1. The Clinch Knot
The Clinch Knot is the workhorse of fly fishing. This knot is most commonly used to tie your fly onto the tippet.
It’s popular because it is:
Quick to tie on the river
Very strong when tied correctly
Easy to learn and remember
Most of the time when you see a guide change flies quickly, they are using a clinch knot.
When to use it: Attaching your fly to the tippet.
2. The Surgeon’s Knot
The Surgeon’s Knot is used to connect two pieces of line together, most often when attaching new tippet to your leader.
One of the biggest advantages of this knot is that it works well even when the two line diameters are slightly different. It is also much faster to tie than more technical knots like the blood knot.
When to use it: Adding tippet to your leader.
3. The Perfection Loop
The Perfection Loop creates a clean, strong loop at the end of a leader or butt section. It’s commonly used when building leaders or when creating loop-to-loop connections.
This knot creates a straight, tidy loop that transfers energy smoothly when casting.
When to use it: Creating loops for loop-to-loop leader connections.
Learn These Knots From One of the Best
If you’d like to see these knots tied step-by-step, our friend and mentor Tom Rosenbauer from Orvis does an excellent job explaining them in this short instructional video.
Master them at home, practice them a few times while watching TV, and soon tying them on the river will become second nature.
And remember, time spent learning knots off the water means more time fishing when you get there.
